China has seen fast growth in the children's wear industry, and rapid expansion of market demand, promising great prospects for the development of the industry.
Based on the Research Report on Children's Wear Market in China, China's production of children's wear is 4.6 billion pieces a year, accounting for about 10 percent of the total number of garments made in the country. Of this, 1.6 billion pieces are woven wear for children, and the remaining 3 billion are knitted garments. The consumption of children's wear in the domestic market is estimated at 2.1 billion pieces, valued at about RMB40 billion, accounting for 7 percent of the total consumption of garments of the country and 3 percent of the world total.
Sales of children's wear are mainly concentrated in wholesale market, accounting for 60 percent of the total. With the single-child policy in China, parents are more willing to buy higher end clothes for their children, so the consumption of medium & high-end children's wear has been on the rise in recent years, presenting an annual growth of 26.5 percent.
China boasts a large number of children's wear buyers, presenting huge market potential. According to population figures, China has about 314 million children less than 14 years old, including 100 million in cities and towns, and 200 million in the countryside. There are 135 million students in China's primary schools and 57 million in middle schools. It is estimated that China will enter a peak baby boom period by 2010 to double the present figure, thus creating a huge market for children's wear.
